A string of tornadoes have swept through the US from the Canadian border to the Deep South.

30 people are now known to have died and the authorities are warning that the death toll could rise.

The worst affected areas are Ohio, Tennessee and Alabama and tens of thousands of homes are still without power.

Unexpectedly high temperatures generated ideal conditions for the tornadoes which cut a 100-mile swath through northwest Ohio.
