The US-based National Association of Insurance Commissioners has called on Congress to improve the treatment of asbestos claimants.
The resolution calls for new legislation to deal with medical criteria and mechanisms to fund companies' asbestos liabilities.
NAIC President Mike Pickens said: "We have to ensure that all claimants are treated fairly, and that requires quality and affordable insurance products that are available only from solvent companies.
"The NAIC recognises the direct correlation between a liquid insurance marketplace and consumer needs. One clearly impacts the other, and we must acknowledge and act upon this."
