The largest labour organisation in the US has urged Senators to oppose legislation that would create a national trust fund to compensate victims of asbestos-related diseases, revealed a report.

In a letter to senators, William Samuel, legislative director of trade union ALF-CIO said the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act was unacceptable to the labour group in its current form.

According to the report, Samuel wrote that the measure would not provide adequate compensation for victims of asbestos-related diseases through the proposed fund.

The proposal does not provide for adequate contingency funding should the number of claims exceed current estimates, added Samuel.

The proposed find would replace the current litigation-based system for settling claims, said the report. Corporate defendants and insurers would provide the capital for the compensation fund.
