Satellite phones and ships’ transponders can be turned off

The disappearance of the 100 metres by 17 metres, 4,000 tonnes, timber-carrying Russian chip the Arctic Sea left "far more questions than answers" and insurance expert has told the Telegraph.

The Malta-operated ship has 15 Russian crew members and its timber cargo is valued at £1.3m.

Satellite phones and ships’ Automatic Identification System transponders can be turned off, the Telegraph reports.
