XL Capital boosted its resources by up to $500m (£308m).
The Bermuda-based group today announced a transaction placed privately on the capital markets that allows it to put up to $500m of its stock to an asset-backed trust for up to 30 years.
Securities issued by the trust were rated A- by Standard & Poor's and A3 by Moody's.
The deal allows XL to increase credit to its property and casualty insurance operations and increase its capacity accordingly.
