Zurich has called on policyholders to check that they have adequate home insurance cover for their children's possessions whilst at school.

Zurich said an increase in claims for rucksacks, which can be worth up to £500, has led to the move.

In some cases Zurich said policyholders with schoolchildren should consider upgrading their home contents policy to cover high value items that their children may take out of the home and into school.

The insurer claimed that children carrying mobiles, trainers and games consoles have led to an increase in schoolbag theft.
