Zurich Municipal has launched a new best practice guide: ‘The design and protection of new school buildings and sites'.
Zurich said an average of 20 schools a week are damaged or destroyed by arson, at a cost of £83m in 2004. The guide is aimed at helping school designers and architects create schools that are less vulnerable to security risks and fires and offers best practice design techniques and advice on materials.
Graham Page, senior risk management consultant at Zurich Municipal, said: "With the Government pledging to replace and renew all of the country's secondary schools over the next 10-15 years through the Building Schools for the Future programme, the current boom in school refurbishment looks set to continue. This offers an ideal opportunity to improve the design of school buildings and sites."
