Zurich Municipal has renewed its calls for sprinklers to be made compulsory in all new or refurbished schools.
The insurer said school fires cost more than £84m in 2004, and each school which suffered a large fire did not have a sprinkler system.
There are less than 200 systems fitted in the 30,000 schools across the UK, it said.
