The foot-and-mouth epidemic and one of the wettest spring periods for years have lead to exceptionally high numbers of claims for cancelled outdoor events, says Weather Direct.

The outdoor events insurer says many venues have still to recover from last autumn's unprecedented flooding and may lead to the cancellation of events this summer.

Steve Warner, managing director of Weather Direct, said: “Organisers that are not covered are either looking at ways of minimising their losses or simply delaying committing funds to an event until the foot-and-mouth situation and ground conditions get back to normal.”
