Danny Walkinshaw reviews the week on the web

Forget the hype around MGAs, regulation and the recession. Insurancetimes.co.uk visitors found another story to tickle their tastebuds.

The insurance industry read in amazement that global broker Aon was linked to a £20m a year, four-year deal to sponsor Manchester United. With AIG set to end its association with the Premier League champions next year, not many would have predicted that the next company to have its logo emblazened across the Reds’ shirts would have come from the insurance industry.

As news spread that Aon had finally sealed the deal, websites across the globe reported the news, including Insurancetimes.co.uk, where it was the most popular story.

More excitement at Insurancetimes.co.uk for the FSA’s announcement over its regulatory fees and levies proposals for 2009/10, which saw it reduce the rates it had originally intended to charge. This will have come as a relief to broker owners.

Coverage of the latest Insurance Times’ claims clinic, including photographs from the London event, also made this week’s most-read list.

Elsewhere on the web, Lloyd’s insurer Amlin’s acquisition of Fortis Corporate Insurance from the Dutch government received worldwide online attention.

The Financial Times website reported that the UK arm of Netherlands-based insurer Aegon was pulling out of the group risk market, resulting in a loss of up to 147 jobs over the next two years from its Edinburgh headquarters, which employs more than 3,000 of its 4,900 British staff.
