Barclays will pay compensation to everyone it sold payment protection insurance and who made a complaint before 20 April.

The bank said customers will be reimbursed the total value of all premiums plus 8% interest.

It added he move would affect tens of thousands of customers and covered all the complaints put on hold during the judicial review into PPI, the BBC reported.

Barclays said it was the first bank to pay out PPI compensation on a "no-quibble" basis.

Barclays recently set aside about £1bn to cover PPI complaints.

The BBC report said that although Barclays set a cut-off date of 20 April for automatic reimbursements, it would assess any complaints received after that date on merit.

Barclays said that customers had waited long enough because of the long-running judicial review into the affair, and this would allow them to clear the backlog quickly and assess new cases more quickly.
