The latest insurance stories online

Stories connected to Quinn Insurance have always been a guaranteed traffic driver and it just so happened that the biggest story to break on the web this year brought the spotlight back on the Irish insurer again.

When the story ‘Administrators appointed to Quinn Insurance’ landed in the inboxes of online subscribers last Tuesday, it started a wave of traffic to the website as the market scrambled to take in the breathtaking developments.

As the story unfolded, more people flocked to the site to read Quinn’s reaction to its forced administration as well as statements from the FSA. These were later followed by our stories focusing on Quinn’s exposure in the professional indemnity market and comments from the Grant Thornton administrator who had begun work running the company.

Online readers were also vocal in their opinions with a number of comments, including one broker who said: “Nobody likes to think of colleagues losing jobs, but when an insurer goes after heavy liability so aggressively, there has got to be a price to pay. Brokers who follow the business-at-any-price strategy devalue our profession – the rumours have been rife for long enough. Caveat emptor.”

As a result of the immense interest, page impressions and unique users reached record levels, and Quinn-related stories accounted for almost half of the day’s traffic. Come the end of the year, Quinn will undoubtedly be near, if not top, of the most popular stories of 2010.

Online readers may also remember that, just over a year ago, Quinn Insurance chief executive Colin Morgan featured in the popular series ‘Five things you didn’t know about …’.
