Max Taylor to chair Pioneer Underwriting

BMS-backed managing general agency Pioneer Underwriting has named former Lloyd’s chairman Max Taylor as its chairman.

In his more than 40-year career, Taylor has also served as deputy chairman of broker Aon’s UK operations. He started his career at Willis predecessor Willis, Faber and Dumas in 1970.

Pioneer Underwriting chief executive Darren Doherty said: “Pioneer is a dynamic, exciting venture and we needed a chairman whose experience and understanding matches our aspirations.

“Max’s knowledge will help us take the next steps in building the team, infrastructure, know-how and governance to match our ambition.”

Taylor added: “Leading the Pioneer Underwriting board is going to be an fulfilling endeavour. I am impressed by the remarkable progress made by the business and the strong underwriting foundation that exists, combined with a compelling, vibrant management team.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
