Hynes departs as McFarlane wrings the changes at insurer

Mark Hynes has become the first senior casualty in the restructuring of Aviva.

A spokesman for Aviva confirmed that Hynes, who was products and governance director in the insurer’s UK general insurance business, had left the company following the latest round of changes.

He said: “We have restructured that part of the underwriting group and obviously Mark Hynes has been structured out.”

Aviva’s new chairman John McFarlane announced the group’s restructuring plans last month, which included selling off parts of the business and stripping out four layers of management.

The spokesman confirmed that Hynes’ team will now report into head of operational underwriting Jamie Lye, who also assumes Hynes’ role.

He said that Hynes was the only director in the UK GI side of the business to go in this fresh round of cuts.

Hynes reported to chief underwriting officer Axel Schmidt.

He also sat on the board of the Chartered Insurance Institute’s underwriting faculty.
