Around 600 remaining staff at Independent Insurance will receive £1,000 bonuses to stay loyal to the company.

A spokeswoman of liquidator Pricewaterhousecoopers (PWC) said: “This bonus is a recognition of loyalty among our high-quality staff. We want to retain as many remaining employees to oversee the run-off business.”

The news broke after a confidential memo, written by liquidator Dan Schwarzmann dated July 31, was leaked to the press. Ex-Independent staff, who had been made redundant after the collapse, called the payment “insensitive” on the staff website.

However, the liquidators said it wanted to make clear this was not a snub to the 1,044 Independent staff who lost their jobs.
