History: Marsh employs more than 36,000 professionally qualified consultants and support staff in over 100 countries.

It is a major subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies, a global professional services firm based in New York which has annual revenues exceeding $10bn (£7.2bn). This enables Marsh's clients to have access to the capabilities of Mercer Consulting Group, a major global provider of consulting services, and Putnam Investments, one of the largest investment management companies in the US. Other operations include Guy Carpenter, which provides reinsurance broking services.

Marsh has some 6,500 staff at more than 30 office locations in the UK. Local offices in the UK are organised into three basic, interrelated categories: client specialties, product specialties, and consulting and advisory services.

He also had day-to-day responsibility for the insurance broking and risk management activities in the New York metropolitan region between 1995 and 1997.

Stephen Mantanle has over 20 years' experience in property insurance and specialises in risk management accounts. He first joined Bowring in 1974, working in the property claims department.

A year later he moved to property placement. In 1982, he was made a director of CT Bowring & Co (Insurance) and a year later, in 1983, he assumed the title of executive director of the property department and was responsible for 80 people.

He was appointed a managing director of Marsh & McLennan, incorporated in March 1988. He briefly left in July 1988 to join Gallagher Plumer North America as chairman and managing director. He subsequently rejoined Bowring North America in June 1989 as deputy chief executive and, in January 1992, he resumed the role of chief executive of Bowring Worldwide Insurance Brokers.

As from January 1995, he has undertaken the role of chairman and chief executive of Marsh & McLennan Global Broking, now renamed Marsh Global Broking. In September 2000, he was made head of placement for Marsh Europe and appointed to the Marsh Europe board. Mike Cooper-Mitchell joined Sedgwick Collins in 1965. After specialising in property and liability insurance, including broking at Lloyd's, he was appointed account executive developing and servicing industrial and commercial clients.

He returned to London in 1990, responsible for the UK branch network, and was then appointed chairman of Sedgwick UK and a director of Sedgwick Europe in 1993.
