One in three holidaymakers has had a disaster while abroad, and more than one in ten has had medical treatment on holiday, revealed a survey from Sainsbury's Bank.
The research found that medical treatment was the most common type of claim made on travel insurance, affecting more than 5 million holidaymakers.
It also found that 3.68 million suffered lost luggage, 2.76 million had to cancel or cut short their holidays, and 2.3 million holidaymakers had money stolen.
Sainsbury's Bank said that only 35% of those surveyed had their claim settled in full, with 11% being partially settled while 7% had their claim turned down.
The research also revealed that 18% of those surveyed had been unable to make a claim for a holiday disaster because they had been uninsured.
