Employer groups have criticised the government's proposals to reduce the sums paid out as part of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS).

The ABI and the Federation of Small Business have come out against the proposal that employers pay compensation to staff who are victims of crime during working hours using their employers' liability (EL) cover. The concept was suggested in the consultation paper 'Rebuilding Lives — Supporting Victims of Crime'.

Currently, the CICS pays out around £200m a year.

The ABI indicates that companies could end up being liable in cases where insurers do not pay out as negligence cannot be proven.
