The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has welcomed today's report by the Human Genetics Commission (HGC) and reiterated the insurance industry's commitment to the five-year moratorium established last year on the use of genetic test results by insurers.
The ABI says the insurance industry aims to provide a period of stability in which debate could continue and a permanent solution be found.
The head of health at the ABI, Richard Walsh, commented:
"We are less than one year into the moratorium and are delighted that it is achieving one of its key objectives - a rational debate on the use of genetic tests and insurance. The HGC report is comprehensive and balanced.
"We strongly support the need to look at models of providing insurance that could be implemented after the moratorium finishes and will take a full part in this process. It will be important to ensure that any future arrangements are sensitive to ethical concerns and can operate effectively in practice."
