The ABI has welcomed proposals to improve road safety through government legislation made clear in the Queen's Speech today.

There will be a crackdown on the use of mobile phones in cars. The penalty will be increased from £30 to £60 with three license endorsement points included in the penalty.

ABI head of motor insurance Justin Jacobs said using mobile phones while driving reduced reaction times by 50%.

Tougher penalties would deter drivers from breaking the law, said Jacobs.

The Queen also said police would be given better access to motor insurance details to allow uninsured drivers to be dealt with effectively.

More than a million people drove without insurance every day, said Jacobs.

Uninsured drivers, he said, created “more danger on the roads and add to the cost of insurance for honest motorists".

“This Bill is welcome confirmation of the government's commitment to tackling the menace of uninsured driving and is fully supported by the insurance industry,” Jacobs said.
