The private motor market can be broken into driver age bands, to better analyse provider performance.

Research carried out in the first quarter of 2003 by Direct Excellence looked at three age bands, under 25, 25-50 and over 50.

Admiral consistently delivered a fast quoting service coming high in all driver age categories.

AA Insurance Services was the only other company to appear in all three groups for this sector.

On price and excess, a number of companies performed well, offering both competitive prices and a low excess.

In the under-25 group, Liverpool Victoria was best on price, with Churchill and Direct Line, that soon may own Churchill, following in second and third place respectively.

Halifax, esure and Sainsbury's Bank, all underwritten by esure, dominate the 25-50 driver age range.

The last two, together with Direct Choice, also scored well in the over-50 group featuring in both the price and excess tables.

The Direct Excellence survey looks at the headline price charged by companies. This shows that some companies flex their excess to reduce their headline prices.
