Up to 62,000 travellers per day are not insured against their airline collapsing, according to reports.

The Sunday Express reported yesterday that twenty five million tickets for scheduled flights each year have no cover if the airline they book with goes bankrupt while they are abroad.

This possibility has increased following the 11 September attacks and the SARS outbreak.

Only travellers on charter flights and scheduled flights as part of package tours are automatically protected by the Air Travel Organisers Licensing scheme.

Tom Brake, Liberal Democrat aviation spokesperson said: "Many passengers do not know that if an airline goes bust, their ticket may not be worth the paper it is printed on."

This admission comes two months after Insurance Times reported that aviation claims fell to their lowest level in 12 years in 2002.
