Allianz Cornhill's motor engineers have undergone anti-fraud training with the Metropolitan Police stolen vehicle unit, in a move to help combat insurance fraud.

The insurer said training its motor engineers could help it tackle the problem of motor insurance fraud, particularly vehicle ringing.

Allianz Cornhill claims fraud manager Mihir Pandya, said: “Motor engineers have been under-used in the fight against insurance fraud.

“With specialist training from experts like the police, engineers are ideally placed to begin the initial fraud detection process.

“We intend to add fraud detection as an integral part of our engineer's training programme.”

The Motor Engineers were shown how to look for irregularities with chassis and vehicle identification plates on the vehicles.

Further exercises were used to see if the true age of vehicles could be determined using hidden dating features, said Allianz Cornhill.

Claims controller Simon Arundel said it was the first UK insurer to send its motor engineers on a tailor-made anti-fraud course.

He said the company had plans to extend such training to all its engineers.
