Drive & Survive has announced that interest in its anti car-jacking and personal protection courses has increased four fold in the first quarter of 2002.
The fleet risk management company believes the increased interest in its courses will help insurers as "if we stop people becoming victims, there'll be fewer claims," said company spokesman Steve Johnson.
The recent increase in car jacking will prove very costly to insurers as thieves often steal the entire vehicle and ship it off to the Middle East, added Johnson. Specific brands are targeted and "stolen to order".
The increased interest is probably due to the increase in publicity about car-jacking which is making people more aware of potential risks they could face.
On the Drive & Survive courses people are taught how to avoid getting into the situation in the first place by being aware, and practical driving skills, among other things.
Johnson explains they have two main types of client: "We get a lot of chauffeurs, and we also get people who are responsible for board members of large companies - where there is the risk of kidnap."
