Richard Harvey, group chief executive of Aviva, is the new Chairman of the ABI following the Association's AGM on 9th July.

Mike Ross CBE of Scottish Widows steps down from the role on completion of his 2-year term.

Harvey said: "The ABI is an increasingly influential body, listened to by government and the FSA alike. The Association plays an essential role, advising and speaking out on issues that affect our members and customers.

"Insurance is centre stage in the policy agenda, and we are set to stay there. We have a big task to explain the full value of our contribution to the social and economic health of the country. There is more we can and should do to build trust with our customers and this is vital if we are to encourage them to make early provision for their future well-being.

"The ABI will continue this year to argue the case for Government action to close the savings gap, for pension reform, and for proportionate regulation of general insurance. We want to tackle the legal costs that lie behind rising liability insurance premiums and to improve rehabilitation. And we are also working closely with member companies to improve transparency and raise standards of customer service throughout the industry.

"I am delighted to be playing my part in making sure that the ABI continues to provide effective leadership to the industry. I will be particularly concerned with promoting our voice in Europe where, provided we are not burdened with unnecessary regulation, further liberalisation of trade will ensure that there are many new markets for British companies to serve."
