Leeds likes to think of itself as Yorkshire cool. But Backchat is coming round to Michael Bright's view of the city – he said at the CII conference that he had to pick people up in York and drive them to Leeds because they would never voluntarily go there.
Backchat was in Leeds for a Lloyd's roadshow last week and, by midnight, was getting a bit peckish. But Backchat and chums couldn't find a single restaurant open.
Having called in to one promising place, only to find it had ceased serving food but was still open for drinks, Backchat suggested calling a taxi to drive around until they found an open eating house.
Tim Cadell, the “sweetie dahling” of Kiln's marketing department, meanwhile ordered the drinks. But boy was he surprised at what the barman served up. Having asked for a “bottle of Bolly” he was served a pint of “Boddies” – the Champagne of the North.
Still, that's a little better than Steve Duffy of Edgar Hamilton could manage. He sent Backchat this photo of him with Insurance Times advertising manager Suzanne Hirst. Sparkling maybe, but it's not Champagne.
