Barclays has expressed concern over government plans for motorists caught without insurance to receive a £200 fine for a first offence.

Managing director of general insurance at Barclays, Eamon Slevin said he feared that due to the high premiums charged to younger drivers they could be tempted to evade the cost of insurance knowing that a £200 fine would be less expensive.

Slevin said: "It is essential we help to educate drivers about the risks of driving without cover and this change of legislation does nothing to support these aims."
