RAC wants larger lettering so over 70s can read road signs

The RAC Foundation wants road signs with bigger lettering to help the 3.7m over 70s still driving, the Telegraph reports.

"There is clearly more that could be done to the road infrastructure to improve the safety of older drivers," said Stephen Glaister, the Foundation's director.

"Fatal accidents involving older drivers generally occur in daylight, at junctions and at low speeds. Interacting with other traffic at junctions is the main risk for older drivers, particularly when turning right across traffic. Improvements such as consistently clear and unambiguous signage across the road network would help."

Andrew Howard, the AA's head of road safety, said larger lettering on signs would give motorists more time in which to make a decision.
