UK drivers can prevent breakdowns this Bank Holiday if they think ahead and take the time to check their tyres, batteries and fuel levels before they leave.

UK broker Budget Insurance Services said car breakdowns increased by an estimated 50% during the holiday week as motorways and coastal routes ground to a halt. However, many of these breakdowns could be avoided with a little forethought.

"We are urging people to check their cars before leaving home," said Simon Jackson, Budget product development director.

"It only takes a few minutes to check tyre pressures, battery power and fill up. And if you haven't done so already, it's well worth taking out breakdown cover if you're thinking of travelling this weekend."

Budget offers the following tips for drivers to have a stress free journey:
Ensure you have a full tank of petrol before leaving and aim to fill up before the tank gets too low.

Check that windscreens, headlights and indicator lights are free from damage, such as cracks.

Check front and rear wiper blades for wear. Use screen wash additive to help keep the screen clear.

Ensure oil and water levels are topped up correctly.

Inspect your battery electrolyte level, topping it up with distilled water if necessary.

Check tyre pressures and tread depth.

Plan your journey and listen to radio reports for any delays or road closure.

Take something to eat or drink in case you get stuck in a jam.

Take regular breaks during long journeys.
