A number of Californians who lost their homes in 2003’s wildfires have filed a proposed class action lawsuit against four US insurers, said a report.
They claim the insurers charged premiums for properties that no longer exist.
The lawsuit was filed against State Farm, Allstate, Farmers Group and Safeco on 4 May at the Los Angeles Superior Court, said the report.
The homeowners involved in the class action paid the full premiums at the time, but have now demanded full refunds with interest and legal fees. In addition they have asked the judge to order that the insurers also pay back profits made from the money.
According to the report, the claim said the insurers were in the process of settling the claims but had not yet replaced the homes when the premiums were paid.
The fires in October 2003 killed 24 people, destroyed 3,710 homes and burnt 750,000 acres of land.
