Thieves are targeting cars for mobile phones, cash and credit cards in so-called 'car muggings', warns a report from Autoglass.

The tenth annual car crime report showed that said that `car muggings' were now four times as common as street muggings, leaving UK insurers and motorists with a £826m bill.

Nigel Doggett, Autoglass managing director, said: "This is one of the UK's fastest growing crime trends and it will hit claims numbers hard."

According to the Autoglass report, thieves stole 641,250 stereos, 256,500 mobile phones, 156,750 briefcases or bags and 128,250 credit cards and chequebooks from cars over the past 12 months.
