The ringleader of a Burton-based insurance fraud gang has been sentenced following a cash-for-crash scam.

Mohammed Shabir, 37, of Uxbridge Street, Burton, got two years in prison for conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to produce cannabis, according to the Burton Mail.

Judge Michael Challinor at Wolverhampton Crown Court said the offence 'struck at the heart of society because it not only affected insurance companies, it resulted in increased premiums for motorists’.

Shabir and 12 others would buy damaged cars, stage crashes and then make false claims to insurers.

In one fake claim, a stolen car deliberately pulled out in front of a car transporter which could not brake in time to avoid a crash.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
