Crawford & Co's UK operations executed its catastrophe plan last week in response to the worst tornado to hit Britain in many years.

Hundreds of private properties and small businesses were affected and the incident prompted claims from small towns and villages in the south of Birmingham.

Crawford was called in to respond to the crisis and immediately set to work assessing the damage and appointing local response teams, including structural engineers, surveyors and supply chain organisations.

Benedict Burke, managing director for general insurance at Crawford, said: “While the overall claims volume is relatively small and damage is localised – well within manageable proportions for the staff we have designated to this incident – many of the losses will be significant and for individual households and businesses caught up in this devastation, we recognise this is a very difficult time.

"The Crawford team has begun the clear-up operation and will work as diligently and as quickly as possible."
