Insurance businesses are being advised to clean up their data in readiness for future regulation.

The Database Group has advised delegates at the International Conference of Data Protection Commissioners that improper data storage could lead to prosecution in the future.

Under forthcoming Data Protection legislation, company directors will be held responsible for compliance. The Database Group has developed a tool, which enables businesses to gain an insight into the health of their data.

Managing director Richard Lees said: "The conference in Cardiff has focussed the issue of data protection legislation which is designed to protect the rights of the individual to privacy by ensuring that access to their data is governed by the Act."

The data check will look at how information is gathered, stored and used for marketing.

The solution also offers a tailored plan for implementing recommendations to address any shortcomings.

"The primary objective of the data health check is to provide a yardstick for the health of a company's data. The Health Check uses sophisticated assessment tools which highlight potential problem areas and give companies recommendations."
