Fixed success fees have been introduced for employers' liability (EL) accident cases in a move to reduce the cost of EL claims.

The Department for Constitutional Affairs said the move would provide certainty over the costs of conditional fee agreements (CFA).

An estimated 48,000 annual claims will come under fixed success fees that came into effect for EL accident cases on 1 October 2004.

Civil Justice Minister David Lammy said: "The introduction of fixed success fees will ensure that legal and insurance professionals deal with claims more efficiently, effectively and economically and justice is delivered at a reasonable and proportionate cost."
