The Environment Agency (EA) has said it will use maps being developed by Norwich Union to identify areas most at risk from flooding, according to general insurer CETA.

The EA normally develops its own maps highlighting areas at risk of flooding, which are then used by underwriters to price building and contents risks. CETA said EA maps produced earlier this year had been criticised by insurers as too basic and lacking in detail.

Norwich Union has spent £3m developing a three-dimensional radar map of the country, according to CETA.

Half of the mapping project has been completed, with the information to be used in pricing decisions from September. The project is expected to be completed by the middle of next year, said CETA.
