I read Andrew Holt's article (Features, 1 February) with great interest. In particular, his question whether or not the industry trade bodies should be doing more to educate the market about environmental liability.

The CEA, the European insurance trade federation, has been leading the way on this issue and very recently held a workshop in Brussels involving the European Commission, national transposition authorities (that is, the government bodies), representatives from large and small businesses, insurers, reinsurers and academics.

The workshop featured the launch of the CEA White Paper on insurability. There are a number of challenges faced by insurers and reinsurers, but the industry is taking a proactive approach and developing what might be termed "cornerstones" on behalf of all 5,000+ insurers and reinsurers in Europe.
