Telephone and internet insurer esure is to offer home insurance in some areas of Scotland that were previously declined due to flooding risks.

The company has been working with leading flood expert Professor David Crichton on a reappraisal of flood planning and defences in Sctoland.

The results of the reappraisal will be that many people living in previously-excluded postcodes will be offered home insurance - after flood defences are created in their areas.

The company caused a stir last month when it said it would decline to insure those homes at risk from flooding in future, sparking fears that all other insurers would follow suit.

Chief executive Peter Graham said: "There has been an exceptional response to the problems of flooding in Scotland over the last five years. We believe that Scotland has in place many of the key elements that England and Wales are lacking in terms of planning and co-ordination.

"esure had assembled data based on a wide range of sources which we use to accept or exclude UK postcodes. Now we are working to revise our risk-ratings across Scotland because of the speed with which the Scottish Executive and local authorities have acted to improve planning and defences."
