An EU proposal to force insurance companies to abandon sex discriminatory policies has come under fire from International Underwriting Association chief Marie-Louise Rossi.
She told delegates at the European Women's Association (EWA) Congress insurance companies should be allowed to calculate premiums and pay claims on the basis of all available statistical data, including gender.
She welcomed a recent indication that the EU will limit the application of a proposed new gender equality directive in the industry.
Rossi said: “Women cause fewer accidents so they area less of a risk, so they pay less. There are even companies that offer low cost insurance cover for women drivers only.”
A final decision will be reached in December.
