Drivers switching from company cars to private cars could now face premiums up to three times more expensive, according to research by insurer Bluesure.

Thousands of drivers are expected to change to private cars next month after the Inland Revenue announced tax changes due to start on 6 April.

The changes are intended to reward 'greener' drivers and experts believe that roughly a quarter of company car drivers' tax bills will go up as a result. Therefore, many are expected to switch back to private cars.

The Bluesure research shows that more than a third of insurers will not award ex company car drivers no claims bonuses, even if they have proven impeccable driving records. It says this is what will make premiums soar.

Bluesure, however, says it will award no claims bonuses to new clients if they can prove they have never made a claim.
