Premium finance specialist Singer & Friedlander cost its owners £2.25m last year.
The bank said that the charge reflected losses "incurred and to be incurred by our insurance premium finance subsidiary arising from the development and launch of a new product."
The banking group's operating profit before tax and non-operating exceptional items fell to £40.7m in 2002 compared to £63.9m the year before.
