Ten Florida brokers have been served with subpoenas as the state becomes the latest to launch investigations into broker abuses and bid rigging.

According to reports, Florida attorney general Charlie Crist plans to issue six more subpoenas next week.

Crist said the probe was prompted by a complaint two weeks ago from a Florida customer of insurance broker Marsh & McLennan Companies.

New York attorney general Eliot Spitzer was the first to launch an investigation into how brokers use contingency commission arrangements to drum up business last month.

California attorney general Bill Lockyer was next to follow suit.

Crist's office said there had been "indications" that brokers improperly steered business to insurers who paid them the highest fees instead of seeking the best deals for customers.

"At this point we are investigating the brokers and insurance companies for possible violations of anticompetitive activities," he said.
