Gadget-lovers are being warned that their household insurance may not fully cover items such as iPods and digital cameras when they are out of their homes.

A Hiscox spokesman said that someone walking around with an iPod, an iPAQ hand-held computer, an Opti S4 camera and a Sony Ericsson mobile phone could have £1,450 worth of uninsured kit.

He said: "The vast majority of household policies won't offer extensive cover for any items taken out of the home. Many people will have to bear most of the cost of breakage or loss themselves."
