The volume of general insurance complaints increased by 18% in the first half of this year, according to new FSA statistics.

The figures show that the total number of GI complaints was up to 848,357 – an 18% increase on the second half of 2010. Of these, 560,892 of these were due to ‘advising selling and arranging’ such products.

The ‘general insurance and pure protection’ figures also contained PPI complaints, which increased by 23% to 531,667.

Across the financial services, total complaints were up 3% to 1,852,284 over the period in question.

The total amount of redress paid decreased by 11% from £459m in the second half of 2010 to £409m in 2011 H1, a figure likely to have been affected by firms placing some of their PPI complaints on hold during thehigh street banks’ judicial review of the FSA’s PPI handling process.
