The House of Lords judgment on Callery v Gray may not be reached for up to a month, Amelans partner Andrew Twambley has estimated.

The hearing started on Tuesday and was expected to conclude today, with Geoffrey Nice QC representing Amelans' client Callery and Antony Temple QC for Norwich Union (NU), the insurer of Gray.

Twambley said the outcome of the case would "determine the whole future of the personal injury sector and access to the criminal justice system for claimants".

"If NU wins, the whole system will be in chaos," he said.

Pundits have predicted that a loss for NU could cost insurers an extra £2.7m each on motor personal injury cases.

NU declined to comment until the hearing finished.
