Hurricane Isabel is heading towards America's East Coast, according to a report. Experts say winds of around 156mph could reach up to 150 miles inland.

The Category Five rated storm, the highest weather experts can give a hurricane, is expected to reach the Carolinas or New Jersey tomorrow before heading north to New York and New England on Thursday and Friday, baring any changes in its course.

There have also been warnings of major floods as much of the area is already saturated from heavy rains over the summer, said the report.

Only three similar Category Five rated hurricanes have hit the US in the last 100 years. Hurricane Camille, which hit Mississippi in 1969, left 256 people dead.

Residents of states likely to be hit have been advised to store essentials, and evacuation routes have been planned.
