Miller Group appoints Bignell

Lloyd's brokerage Miller Insurance Group has appointed Mike Bignell to head its new risk consultancy arm, Dawson Risk Management Services.

Bignell has 19 years' experience with broker giant Marsh.

The new division will provide due diligence and risk management services for the energy, marine and power sectors.

Head of Miller's energy unit Julian Taylor said the move was evidence of the changing role of insurance broking into a more client-focused, value-added advice service.

New time limit

Government action has been demanded to back the Law Commission's recommendation on the reintroduction of time limits on professional negligence claims.

Two recent Court of Appeal decisions (Brocklesby vs Armitage & Guest and Cave vs Robinson Jarvis & Rolfe) have meant that professional firms and their insurers defending negligence claims are subject to no time limit.

According to law firm Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC), the two cases meant the time bar on all deliberate acts that cause a breach of a professional's duty of care would have the time bar lifted.

The Law Commission also recommends an absolute time limit of ten years on virtually all litigation, down from the original 15 years that existed before Brocklesby.
