Indian insurance company Tata AIG has offered big payouts for Bombay commuters who die on national holidays.

If they die on one of India's eight national holidays, their nominees will receive 10 million rupees or nearly £146,000.

The cover applies to commuters who die on Republic Day, the Festival of Colours, Good Friday, Independence Day, Gandhi's birth anniversary, Dussehra, Id and Christmas Day.

Tata AIG senior vice-president Raj Raman said: "The idea of the 10 million rupees death benefit was to hook a customer's attention. Our research has shown that very few commuters die on public holidays."

Rival insurance firms say the 10 million rupee figure is "just a cheap tactic" as very few holidays have been selected.

An official from a private sector insurance firm said: "They should have included Sundays as well in order to really help Bombayites."

But Raman said the policy was fully transparent, with incidents of accidental death while commuting by train or on roads at very high levels.

On average, 10 to 15 people die every day while travelling in Bombay on local trains and buses, according to the India Express.
