The Institute of Risk Management (IRM) is exploring
the possibility of putting its examinations online and
developing e-learning capabilities.

IRM executive director Steve Fowler said he met with
the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) last Friday to
discuss its e-learning initiative, where CII members
can take their examinations online, and to assess the
logistics of the IRM making a similar move.

"It was an interesting meeting. The difference is that
the structure of the CII examination paper is very
much about question/answer where you just tick a box. The IRM exams are very much like a degree or
postgraduate exam where they are more scripted. This
may not work as well online," Fowler said.

IRM chairman Mark Butterworth said that the process by
which the examinations were processed and marked by
examiners was "very much under review" and the IRM
strategy was "going to plan".

"It is very much an evolving strategy," he said.

He also indicated that working with other associations
and professional bodies would continue. He remained
tight-lipped on the rumours that the IRM and Airmic
may merge in the future.

"Everything is up for discussion," he added.
