A bankruptcy judge in Pittsburgh has issued a ruling against the insurers involved in the Halliburton case.

The judge said the insurance companies, led by Ace and Hartford, did not have standing to challenge or intervene in the judge's decision regarding the bankruptcy cases of DII Industries and Kellog Brown & Root, two Halliburton subsidiaries.

Both companies have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, said a report. It said the insurers wanted to stop the bankruptcy being used to resolve the companies' asbestos liabilities.

According to the report, the ruling means the insurers will have no say in the size or criteria of loss payouts.

Hartford has already said it plans to appeal against the decision.
